If you want the single upgrade that makes a home feel genuinely automatic, it isn't a fancy hub or a voice assistant — it's a handful of cheap motion sensors. They're the difference between a house you have to operate and a house that responds to you simply being in it. Walk into a room, the light comes on; leave, it goes off. No app, no switch, no thought.
Motion sensors are also where a lot of people's automations first go wrong, because a badly placed or badly tuned sensor is worse than none at all. A light that turns off while you're mid-shower, or a hallway that flares every time the dog wanders past, will have you ripping the whole thing out within a week. The good news is that almost every motion problem comes down to two things: where you put the sensor, and how you set its timing.
Motion sensors shine in spaces you pass through rather than linger in. Hallways, staircases, bathrooms, closets, garages, laundry rooms, and entryways are all natural homes for them. In these transit spaces, hands-free light is a small daily luxury that quickly becomes something you can't imagine living without.
They're less suited to rooms where you sit still for long stretches. A living room or home office needs either a very generous timeout or a different approach entirely, because most sensors only detect movement, not presence. Sit quietly reading and a basic sensor decides the room is empty. Newer presence sensors that detect a stationary body solve this, but they cost more and can be fussier to tune, so match the sensor to the room rather than buying one type for everywhere.
Beyond lighting, motion sensors are quietly useful as triggers for all sorts of routines — nudging the thermostat when a room gets used, sending an alert if there's movement while the house should be empty, or turning on an exhaust fan in a steamy bathroom. A few placement principles save a lot of grief:
Spend five minutes walking the room before you commit to a spot. Hold the sensor where you're thinking of mounting it, move around as you normally would, and watch its indicator light. Two minutes of testing beats two weeks of a sensor that catches you late or misses you entirely.
Height matters too. Most sensors are happiest mounted somewhere between waist and head height for room coverage, or up in a corner for a wide sweep. Check the manufacturer's suggested range rather than guessing.
The timeout — how long the light stays on after the last movement — is the setting that makes or breaks a motion automation. Too short and the light dies while you're still standing there, waving your arms to bring it back. Too long and it burns for ages in an empty room, undermining the point.
There's no universal number, because it depends on the room:
A smart refinement is to reset the timer on every new detection rather than counting from the first. That way, continued movement keeps the light alive, and the countdown only starts once you've genuinely stopped moving. Most platforms handle this automatically, but it's worth confirming yours does.
